I would also add that what is missing is a framework.

Every organization is unique and every implementation is different. We discovered, however, in our ten years of research, eight areas of excellence in execution, where all the organizations who successfully implemented their strategy, focused. In Bridges these eight areas evolved into our proprietary tool, the Implementation Compass (TM). Excellence in execution is not about doing one or two things well, such as changing measures or communicating the strategy. It is about doing eight things well, simultaneously.

The Implementation Compass is a framework that provides you with the structure for your strategy to make it come alive. Instead of wandering aimlessly through the implementation maze it allows you to assess your implementation readiness and identify the key areas to tackle.

The eight points of the Compass: People, Biz Case, Communicate, Measure, Culture, Process, Reinforce and Review have not changed since its introduction. In fact it has been developed further. In Beyond Strategy (my new book) the Implementation Compass provides the headers for the chapters and each chapter ends with the actions leaders must take.

In theory I agree, but in practices, as the Sidekick episode demonstrated, the backups don't always work or aren't always there...

Whatever kind of business you're in, the internet can always provide solutions for things like these. With BPO, data are backed up twice so that when one crashes, the other can take over.

You are asking alot of the COO-like some idea about how to differentiate themselves, have a strong focus and even have a big picture strategy on how to get there. I work with a lot of mid-market US companies helping them open new market space and create demand. In this economic environment they are becoming wonderfully creative and you are going to see some great innovations and Blue Oceans emerging. Hope Verizon can find one too. Andi

SUV and Environment together maybe considered being an oxymoron by some and this is where my response lies. The demographic that would drive a vehicle from Land Rover, whist not saying that they are anti-environment, the carbon offsetting scheme is something that would appeal to them, as it can justify their lifestyle without having to alter it a great deal and as a result carbon offsetting is/will be an extremely successful as many companies find this a convenient response to mounting environmental concerns and reinforce and validate their products.

Planting trees may be a short term answer that is being offered to us from companies such as Climate Care. However, the problem is the continuous addition of carbon into the environmental system which is altering the atmosphere’s equilibrium. Nor planting trees or renewable energies can offset this additional carbon introduced into the environment in the form of CO2. Only through cutting carbon emissions and particularly by removing carbon from the atmosphere can these phenomena be controlled and even reversed. A good example is ocean iron fertilizing http://www.futurepundit.com/archives/002056.html .
